CARSTEN NICOLAI, ARTIST, BERLIN

The German artist and musician Carsten Nicolai uses a combination of electronic sounds and visual arts as a hybrid tool. Sound is a primary theme in his creative acts which he stages in visualized sound performances. Nicolai started his speech with the minimal pixel video 'Spray'. With his experimental projects he analysed everyday perception phenomena and examined the links between art, nature and science. Born in 1965, in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Nicolai studied landscaping at the Dresden University of Technology. He then founded the artists' co-operative gallery 'Oscar' and 'Voxxx', a culture factory. Carsten Nicolai lives and works in Berlin and Chemnitz.
